Understanding Club Volleyball Rankings: A Parent's Guide
If you're new to club volleyball, the national ranking system can feel like a mystery. You see numbers next to team names, arrows going up and down, and phrases like "strength of schedule" thrown around — but nobody ever explains what it all means. This guide breaks it down in plain language so you can follow along with confidence.
What Are National Rankings?
National rankings are a system used to rank club volleyball teams across the United States based on their competitive performance throughout the season. These rankings are calculated using match results from sanctioned tournaments — primarily those run through Advanced Event Systems (AES) by SportsEngine, which powers the vast majority of club volleyball events in the country.
Rankings are updated weekly during the club season (roughly January through June) and reflect each team's cumulative performance. They are broken down by gender and age group — so a 14U Girls team is ranked against other 14U Girls teams nationally.
How Are Rankings Calculated?
The exact formula involves several factors, but the key inputs are:
Win/Loss Record — The most obvious factor. Teams that win more matches rank higher. But it's not just about volume — a 20-5 record against strong opponents is worth more than a 25-0 record against weaker teams.
Strength of Schedule — This is the secret sauce. A team's ranking is heavily influenced by the quality of the opponents they've faced. Beating a top-10 team boosts your ranking far more than beating an unranked team. Conversely, losing to a low-ranked team hurts more than losing to a top-5 team.
Head-to-Head Results — When two teams have played each other, the result of that specific matchup carries extra weight. If you beat a team ranked above you, that's a strong signal.
Tournament Level — Not all tournaments are created equal. National qualifiers and large regional events tend to carry more weight than smaller local tournaments because the competition level is higher.
National vs. Regional Rankings
You'll see two types of rankings on WhichCourt:
National Rank — Where a team stands compared to every team in the country in their age group and gender. This is the big-picture view.
Regional Rank — Where a team stands within their USAV region. The United States is divided into volleyball regions (like Great Lakes, Southern, Lone Star, etc.), and regional rankings show how a team compares to their geographic neighbors.
Regional rankings matter because many teams primarily play within their region during the regular season. A team might be ranked #150 nationally but #8 in their region — and that regional ranking often tells you more about the competition you'll actually face at local tournaments.
What Do the Movement Arrows Mean?
On WhichCourt's rankings page, you'll see small arrows (or delta indicators) next to a team's rank. These show how a team's ranking has changed since the previous week:
- Green up arrow — The team moved up in the rankings
- Red down arrow — The team dropped in the rankings
- No arrow — The team's rank stayed the same
A big jump (up or down) usually means the team had a strong weekend at a tournament — either winning key matches against ranked opponents or suffering unexpected losses.
How to Use Rankings as a Parent
Rankings are a useful tool, but they're not everything. Here's how to think about them:
For scouting opponents — Before a tournament, check the rankings of the teams in your pool. It gives you a quick sense of the competition level you'll face. A pool with three top-50 teams is going to be a different experience than a pool with unranked teams.
For tracking progress — Watch your team's ranking over the course of the season. A steady climb means the team is improving and winning the matches that matter. A plateau or drop might indicate a tough stretch of the schedule.
For perspective — Rankings fluctuate. A bad weekend at a tournament can drop a team 20 spots, and a great weekend can jump them back up. Don't read too much into a single week's movement.
Don't let rankings define the experience — At the end of the day, club volleyball is about player development, teamwork, and the love of the game. Rankings are a fun way to track competitive standing, but they're one piece of a much bigger picture.
